Combine Training with Problem Solving
Through my volunteer work at Joomla.org, I meet lots of folks who "get" most of Joomla!, but there are one or two things they can't quite master.
Certainly the forums are a lot of help. When I am stuck, which happens more than I like to admit, I go straight to this link, which I got from Brad, the Forum Wizard at Joomla.org (and Rochen). Believe me, there's no better place on earth for answers.
In talking to people, they don't just want a problem fixed, they'd like to learn HOW to diagnose and fix problems themselves.
So here's what we've started to do:
- We thoroughly discuss the problem(s) and what our choices may be for solutions.
- We download and install a screen-sharing utility to both computers (mine and the clients), and then we match up in a shared session and go to the website.
- Student takes control of my PC, and logs into the back office.
- I take over, and as methodically as possible, and through telephone connections or chat, explain what I am doing and why.
- After solution of each issue, the student takes over the mouse and keybord and repeats the steps to get some "muscle memory".
If you're going to pay for help, you may as well learn from the experience.
Ohh, and here's that search string I show the link to above:
