Mobile-Ready? Why Bother?

Written by Randy Williams on .

"The number of users with mobile devices is expected to climb to 5.2 billion in 2017 from 4.3 billion in 2012 and traffic across high-speed 4G networks will grow 40-fold during that time, according to a five-year forecast for mobile traffic data compiled by Cisco Systems and released today.

Global mobile data traffic grew 70 percent in 2012, with global mobile data traffic reaching 885 petabytes per month at the end of 2012. That’s up from 520 petabytes per month at the end of 2011 and almost 12 times greater than total Internet traffic in 2000, which was 75 petabytes per month."

Joomla Provides Relief for Non-Profit Organizations

Written by Randy Williams on .

A not-for-profit organization needs two things to survive and grow:

  1. A continuing source of cash
  2. Volunteers

A Joomla website can help provide both! Many phenominal extensions are available to secure and manage both. We recommend Auction Factory and CiviCRM. Harper Vance has experience helping non-profits with Joomla websites. There is something extremely satidfying about seeing your efforts contribute to good works in our communities and our nation.

AuctionFactory

Adding Auction Factory to your website brings the following opportunities:

  1. The announcement phase would generate local publicity, give you a chance to get your story in the media, say what you've done so far with nothing, and grandly speculate about what you could do with a continuing source of funding.
  2. The citizenry might be pursuaded to donate cars, boats, snowmobiles, etc. to the auction, and you'd easily be able to document the donations for tax purposes.
  3. Outreach to the entire region for buyers... your local fund-raising efforts are limited by publicity and the calendar.
  4. Probably most important, you'd extend the "giving season" to year round.

Adding CiviCRM to your website helps you organize your outreach to volunteers and donors. They are critical to your success, and any tool that helps you obtain and encourage them is worth the time and trouble.

Don't Hack the Joomla Core

Written by Randy Williams on .

I am often asked to help migrate Joomla 1.5 sites to a newer version now that 1.5 has reached end of life. A pattern is emerging that I haven't really considered in the past. The common thread is that the sites have been "altered" significantly to produce desired visual effects or functionality.

I am part of a group of folks in the Joomla Community whose mantra has become, "Don't hack the Joomla! core. Extend and over ride instead."

With over 10,000 extensions published in the Joomla Extensions Directory, and with the "alternate layout" feature in 2.5 and 3.0, there is almost NEVER a good reason to hack the core.

IE Market Share at an all time low

Written by Randy Williams on .

This just in, it has been reported that Internet Explorer (all versions) have a combined market share of 54%.

While still significant, of course, I have memories from a time when their share was nearly 90%.

I don't normally wish anyone bad luck, but I hope that share continues to dwindle to the point MS brings all versions of the IE browser  into standard compliance.

Adding a Feed to Your Facebook Page

Written by Randy Williams on .

As some of you know too well, RSS feeds CAN be a little tricky to deal with on a Joomla Site. Your feed is often going to include things you didn't intend to feed, and exclude things you desperately want to feed. I like the NinjaRSS Syndicator component very much, and recently installed it at http://aventuramartialarts.com

It creates a feed at: http://www.aventuramartialarts.com/index.php?option=com_ninjarsssyndicator&feed_id=1 which is then very easy to import to your Facebook page.

Please let us know if you're having any difficulties with it, we're happy to help.
